Imagine a situation in which an English teacher has to deal with students’ diverse linguistic backgroundknowledge and make them recognize and value the different English dialects and varieties, promoting apluralistic view of English. Considering this scenario, to foster an inclusive learning environment, the teacher should address thelinguistic diversity and geopolitical aspects of English by
- Aemphasizing the standard English pronunciation (stress and intonation) and its geopolitical aspects, providingexamples of other English varieties just for the student’s acknowledgment, through pair work activities.
- Bintegrating discussions about the historical and geopolitical contexts of English, while working withstudents’ global awareness and language appreciation through the proposition of a project research.
- Cencouraging students to focus on the work with sentence structure, phonetic transcription andpronunciation of standard English varieties, through phonetic and grammar activities.
- Ddealing with students’ different accents and backgrounds, working with extensive reading and listening,showing them videos from English spoken around the world.
