There are many approaches to teaching English as an additional language. Although methods can differ significantly, there is no single best method for teaching a second language. One of the most widely practiced approaches is content based instruction, which consists of:
  1. ALearning lists of vocabulary, verb paradigms, and grammatical rules. Learners then translate passages from the target language into their native language.
  2. BMaking the language meaningful while getting the student to communicate in the target language. Learners are encouraged to discuss issues and express opinions on various topics of interest.
  3. CRecognizing a vocabulary of some fifty to one hundred words by rote learning, often by seeing the words used repeatedly in a story.
  4. DPutting students in various real-life situations, so that they can learn how to use their language skills in the real world.
