The Curricular Guidelines for High School - MT (2012, p.90) approach some effects of global expansion of English language teaching around the world. According to them, the expansion of English in the world and its relationship with other languages was not something innocent. It is solidly rooted in the colonial period of the British Empire and in ideological arguments related to language teaching in the world to promote capitalist interests.Mato Grosso. Secretaria de Estado de Educação. Orientações Curriculares: Área de Linguagens: Educação Básica. Cuiabá: Gráfica Print, 2012From those considerations, it is CORRECT to say that:
- AThe global expansion of English involves only linguistic and educational issues.
- BThe expansion of English means not only the expansion of the language, but also the expansion of a set of discourses that, by promoting English, simultaneously promote ideals of progress, and studies of grammar.
- CThe link between the expansion of English and British colonialism and North American imperialism must be ignored.
- DEnglish is not "global" but "worldwide". The term "worldwide" is linked to the sphere of culture. […] As a world language, English breaks away from its roots and gains its own existence as a deterritorialized language, capable of being enunciated, appropriated, and re-signified by speakers of different mother tongues in everyday face-to-face and/or virtual interactions.
- EGlobal English has owners, "native speakers". It belongs to all those who use it for some purpose in their daily lives. It is a global language and no longer a foreign language, because it is increasingly becoming the common language among non-native speakers of English around the world.
