Hutchinson and Waters (1991) point out that English for Specific Purposes (ESP) emerged from three common reasons. One of them is related to the changes in the aim of linguistics, considering the variation from one language situation of use to another. Besides that, the expansion of technology and commerce after World War II, especially in the United States, explains why English became a necessity.Mark the alternative that is related to the third reason why ESP became popular worldwide:
- AESP is an approach that focuses on learning. Students’ fields of interest are taken into account, which makes the learning process more meaningful and relevant to their needs.
- BThe focus of ESP is on language, since different texts can present very specific vocabulary and the teacher needs to be aware of that so that he can promote an ideal environment for learning.
- CAs ESP is a language-focused approach, grammar structure plays an important role because as students learn them, they can easily understand different types of text. The teacher is supposed to base his/ her classes on reading activities that reflect students’ necessities.
- DESP is a learning-centered approach in which the most important feature is vocabulary acquisition. Lexical combinations are paramount, and teachers are expected to provide students with strategies to understand articles they need to read.
- EESP is focused exclusively on reading strategies. Teachers work with articles that can help students in their area of interest, which is why reading comprehension tasks are more important than structural ones.
