One way of garanteeing grammatical cohesion in English is by using tense agreement, since if the writer or speaker changes the verb tense constantly, it is difficult to follow. A teacher that follows the task-based or the communicative approach should
- Ateach the verb tenses right from the beginning of the school year because tenses are essential for communication.
- Bnever teach the verb tenses, but expose the students to naturalistic forms of language acquisition within the school environment as if they were in an English speaking country.
- Cteach a verb tense per day. Little by little it becomes easier to remember them.
- Dintroduce the verb tenses in the context in which they are necessary, not one day before. They will not make sense or be memorized otherwise.
- Eask the students to look up the verb tense section of their grammar or coursebooks and to study it thoroughly in their own time.
