Suppose this text is read by teachers taking an in-service training course in teaching English as a Foreign Language. One of the course’s objectives is to develop the teachers’ awareness about the importance of critical reading and interculturality. To help achieve these purposes, the following activity is proposed:
- A“Read the text carefully in order to be able to provide your sustained opinion on the ongoing discussion raised by the writer.”
- B“Identify the weak and strong points in the interviewee’s exposition on the topic of the smartphone use and prohibition in American schools.”
- C“Skim through the text to identify comprehension difficulties deriving from your poor background knowledge on the topic.”
- D“Analyze the interviewee’s words about the reaction to smartphone prohibition in US schools and relate them to what you see happening in Brazilian schools.”
- E“Do research on the text’s linguistic and cultural references you are not familiar with.”
