Functions can be performed at different levels of formality, depending on the context and the intimacy between speakers. Considering the ordinary use of the language, there is an adequate choice of grammar and vocabulary in the utterance in alternative:
- AYoung father to twelve-year-old son: “I’d appreciate it if you should return home before dark”.
- BBrother to little sister: “Should you need my assistance, don’t hesitate to ask”.
- CHead of Customer Service to client: “No worries. Speak soon”.
- DPresiding officer to audience: “Welcome to this momentous occasion, our graduation ceremony.”
- EDean to post-graduate students: “How’s it going?”
