As far as standard English is concerned, the teacher’s correction of the principal’s words “It’s not ‘less people’, it’s ‘fewer’” is
- Ainvalid, because the noun “people”, though plural as a concept, is uncountable in form.
- Bappropriate, considering such use of “less” would only be acceptable in a more formal context.
- Cunjustified, as “less” and “fewer” are equally used to indicate “a smaller amount of”.
- Dlegitimate, since “fewer”, not “less”, quantifies countable nouns.
- Ereasonable, and the alternative for “less” should have been “lesser”.
