According to the (PCNs-Parâmetros Curriculares nacionais), it states that learning a foreign language represents another possibility to act in the world through discourse beyond what the mother tongue offers. Just like the teaching of the mother tongue, the teaching of a foreign language incorporates the question of how people act in society through words, constructing the social world, themselves, and others around them. Therefore, according to the PCNs, it is correct to affirm that language teaching offers:
- Aaccess to how the proposed transversal themes are constructed in discursive practices of other societies.
- Bacquisition of basic communicative skills and a limited view of cultural diversity.
- Cthe opportunity to act in the world solely through discourse, constructing the social world.
- Dimmediate communication, focusing on issues of personal interest.
